Easter Monday in Cleveland means one thing: Dyngus Day — a celebration of joy, heritage, and community that brings Polonia together like no other day of the year.
At Polish Veterans Alliance Post 1, the spirit of this beloved Polish tradition was alive and thriving as friends, families, and visitors gathered to celebrate the official end of Lent and the beginning of the Easter season.
From Tradition to Celebration
Dyngus Day—known in Poland as Śmigus-Dyngus or “Wet Monday”—has deep roots in Polish culture. Traditionally, it marks the end of Lenten fasting and welcomes spring with joy, laughter, and playful customs like splashing water and tapping with pussy willow branches
In Cleveland, the tradition has grown into something even bigger—a vibrant Polish-American celebration filled with music, food, and community pride. Today, it’s often described as a kind of “reverse Mardi Gras”—a day to celebrate after the solemnity of Lent
